Chelsea have scrapped through to the Carabao Cup fourth-round with a penalty shootout victory over Aston Villa.

Timo Werner put the Blues ahead with a terrific header which was set up by a Reece James cross early in the second half, his first goal in 11 matches. But the lead didn’t last long as Villa deservedly levelled through Cameron Archer.

A penalty shootout ensued after 90 minutes and it was Chelsea who came out on top.

Ashley Young struck the crossbar with Villa’s second penalty before Kepa Arrizabalaga saved their third from Marvelous Nakamba.

Ben Chilwell then struck the bar to take it to the final set of penalties. But Reece James made no mistake as he sent Chelsea into the next round, where they will face Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
