Timo Werner played primarily as a striker for Chelsea last season, scored just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances in his first season in England and has only started once for the Blues so far this term.
Glen Johnson believes that under fire striker has to change position in order to salvage his Chelsea career following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku earlier this summer.
Johnson says the German international still has a future at Stamford Bridge, but may have to look at playing on the wing in order to cement a spot in the first team
‘It’s clear that Timo Werner hasn’t performed to the standard we all know he’s capable of, but he wasn’t brought in to play as an out and out striker. Romelu Lukaku hasn’t come in to replace Werner within the squad,’ he told BonusCodeBets.
‘Chelsea are most effective playing dynamic football with a big, less mobile striker and two whippets playing off the forward. Werner can still play a big part, but his performances must improve.
‘Timo has a future at Chelsea, but playing on the wing is his only option, and even then, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all start ahead of him based on what we’ve seen so far.
‘Although, things change very quickly in football, it only takes an injury for Timo to get another chance, and if he hits the ground running, he can re-establish himself in the side.’
