Paul Merson has explained he’s worried “key” Chelsea player Mason Mount and Jorginho won’t be fully fit in time for the new season.

The Blues squad are currently preparing during pre-season, but don’t have the full group yet due to the fact some are still on holiday after involvement in the international duties.Tuchel’s side still have a few more friendly games lined up in the next couple of weeks.

The Blues will play Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup on 11 August, before kickstarting their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace. It’s a daunting start to the league campaign with Palace, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester City in their first six matches.

Merson is suggesting that Mount and Jorginho, who are not yet back to pre-season, may not be at their sharpest for the start of the season.

“Chelsea are facing a nightmare start to the new season and their first six games are already make or break,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.

“They have tough fixtures and it’s made even worse because so many of their players won’t be back from the Euros in time to be fully fit to play in them.Good luck to any team having to do without key men like Jorginho and Mason Mount for too long.

“Those two went further than most at the Euros as England and Italy both reached the final – and they’re two of Chelsea’s most important players.”

Of course, Mount and Jorginho are two outstanding individuals at Stamford Bridge. They both played a lot of football last season, so Tuchel will want them as fresh as possible for next year.

If neither are at 100 per cent for the opening league game, Chelsea’s squad should cope.

There is so much talent in the Blues ranks that it may be a collective effort to try get the team off to a good start.
