Manchester United’s Defense In The 2021-22 Season Was Historically Poor

For the first time since 1978-79, United had its worst defensive performance in a league season.

With 57 goals conceded, they finished 13th in the Premier League, four more than relegated Burnley.

They concluded the season with an anticipated goals conceded (xGA) total of 60.4, implying that they were fortunate not to have conceded four more goals in their 38 games.

It was the most goals they had given up in a league season since 1978-79. United had a history of poor defense in 2021-22, but they still needed a touch of luck to maintain things better than they were.
