The Blues midfielder Jorginho has explained why he took the penalty in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Jorginho explained why he had to take the penalty in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Newcastle.

The Blues were already leading by two goals thanks to James’ brace when Kai Havertz won a penalty in the 80th minute of the game.

James could have been the first-ever defender to score a hat-trick in the Premier League if he had taken the penalty, but Jorginho took the responsibility as he usually does.

Jorginho did not disappoint, though, as he sent Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow the wrong way and sealed the win.

Still, some Blues fans might have questioned why Jorginho did not just allow James to take the penalty. According to Jorginho himself, he would have, had James asked him to.

He told ESPN Brasil correspondent Joao Castelo-Branco after the game: “If he had wanted it, he would have said it to me — but he didn’t, instead he came to support me.”

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Jorginho also highlighted the impact that the right wing-back had on the game.

“He’s amazing with both feet. He opened the game for us. It was great, two beautiful goals.”
