Timo Werner said he could not be among Chelsea penalty takers in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa due to his calf problem.
It is safe to say that Thomas Tuchel has plenty of accomplished penalty takers at his disposal.
Jorginho, Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz, and Werner, were all the designated penalty takers for their former clubs.
Werner, who also scored his first Chelsea goal of the season against Villa, was not among the penalty takers at Stamford Bridge, however, after picking up a minor calf injury in the second half.
Werner told Chelsea TV: “First of all, I had some pain in my calf, but because [we’ve used all] the three substitutions, I couldn’t come off.
“When you have fit players, it’s better that they shoot the penalties.”
The Blues had to work harder than initially expected for the win, but in the end, they managed to book a place in the fourth round and rest several key players ahead of the big Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Werner’s calf injury is hopefully only a minor problem since despite Chelsea’s having a lot of other attacking options, his pace might be needed to stretch Manchester City’s defence on Saturday afternoon.
