Arsenal title winner Paul Merson says Chelsea need more than Timo Werner in terms of firepower this new season.

Werner scored just 12 goals in all competitions, and just six in the Premier League as Merson expressed his concern.

He said: “In my opinion, Chelsea need a forward. I don’t know what the deal is with Erling Haaland, but they need someone who can score 20 Premier League goals a season.

Timo Werner is a different kind of player – he’s a willing runner who works hard for the team and is very unselfish.

However, he doesn’t strike me as someone who can score 20 goals a season, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens there.”

Seemingly, at the moment, it might be unthinkable to offload Werner after just one season.

After all, he still racked up 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions despite several frustrating barren spells last season.

But if Chelsea manage to convince Erling Haaland or someone with expected firepower to join this summer, Werner would certainly find it more difficult to keep his spot in the team. He’s often been unlucky with his obvious offside problems.

Selling Werner could mean losing a 25-goal-a-season striker to another club. The German is still a strange one in the league.

There’s one more season where a baby wouldn’t be thrown out with the bathwater because he’s so close to scoring.
