After Chelsea‘s latest addition signed a seven-and-a-half year contract with the club, rival fans alleged that “Todd Boehly thinks it’s baseball.”

The Blues announced on Thursday that they have signed Benoit Badiashile, 21-year-old, French defender, from Monaco for an estimated sum of £35 million. The length of Badiashile’s contract, which runs through the summer of 2030, rather than the transfer cost, is what has people’s interest.

After his arrival was announced, rival supporters could not help but wonder if Chelsea chairman Boehly still believed he was in charge of a baseball team.

The American businessman owns 20% of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, whose player contracts frequently last for more than ten years.

“Todd Boehly thinks he’s running a baseball team still,” one supporter of a rival team tweeted. One more joked: “Boehly thinks this is baseball.” A third added: “Badiashile’s signed a seven-and-a-half(!) year contract, got to question the fella’s ambition.”

Chelsea fans were equally unconvinced, with one simply saying: “Seven and a half year contract? We’re gonna be f***ed when he turns out s*** and then we’re stuck with him.”

Another fumed: “Who is negotiating these contracts!? I thought the recent spate of 6 year deals were mad. We’ve just signed this bloke on a 7.5 year contract! SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS. What happens if he’s s***?”

The signing also provoked this angry reaction: “SEVEN AND A HALF YEAR CONTRACT FOR BADIASHILE WHATTTTT!” Meanwhile, one other fan simply wrote: “7.5 years, wtf is this.”

Before moving to Stamford Bridge, Badiashile, who has already made 135 first team games for Monaco, had previously been linked with both Newcastle United and Manchester United.

He has two caps for France’s senior team and is a French under-21 international, although he was left off the World Cup roster.

Badiashile was happy to join Chelsea despite being bound by a seven-and-a-half year contract, stating on the club website: “I’m very happy to be here at Chelsea. I’m so excited to start playing for this club. I can’t wait to see the fans and start playing in the best league in the world.”

Meanwhile, Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali added: “We’re delighted to welcome Benoit to Chelsea. He’s an excellent young player who has quickly established a strong reputation for himself and has a huge amount of experience for his young age. We are sure he will form an important part of our team in the years ahead.”
