England 8-0 Norway: The Lionesses 'tear apart' their major group rivals in Brighton with SIX first-half goals including a hat-trick from Beth Mead.

England advanced to the Euro 2022 quarter-finals with a spectacular 8-0 victory over Norway at the Amex Stadium, the best win in the competition’s history.

In a dominant first half, the tournament’s hosts scored six goals, including two from each of Ellen White and Beth Mead after Georgia Stanway’s penalty in the 12th minute and a goal from Lauren Hemp three minutes later.

That was equal to the most goals scored by one side in a Euros match, and England then broke the previous mark for the most convincing victory at a finals with a 6-0 victory over Scotland in 2017.

Sarina Wiegman hails her relentless England side after their ‘special’ 8-0 thrashing of Norway helped them ease through to last eight of Euro 2022 but insists they will ‘stay really grounded’

The England boss praised her side for their relentless approach but admitted she was surprised at their blistering start in the 8-0 thrashing of Norway

Sarina Wiegman, now England’s manager, won the EUROs in 2017 while managing the Netherlands, the current champions, lauded her team for their unwavering attitude but acknowledged that she was surprised at their explosive start in the 8-0 thrashing of Norway.

‘…games can go really strange. We’ve seen so many games when it’s 3-0 and goes to 3-3, but when it went to 4-0 and 5-0 I thought they’re not going to recover from this. Speaking on her team’s six goals in the first half, Wiegman.

‘It was a very special night. We didn’t expect to make such a big win but we played really well. We really exploited their weaknesses.

‘We were 2-0 up pretty quickly, we got momentum so we could just play the possession game.

‘They had a hard time getting pressure on the ball. We are trying to play our game, today we did.”

The Arsenal striker Beth Mead, who has four goals in England’s first two games, gave the team the lead on a “unbelievable night,” but she acknowledged that scoring a hat-trick as England crushed Norway 8-0 was beyond anything she had ever dreamed of.
