Mason Mount Everyone thought that he would be tasked with tracking Jorginho, and the pair did have their moments up against each other early on, but he instead occupied the left wing for the most part. Almost set up Raheem Sterling for a chance that would have surely made it 2-0. Will be disappointed to have been beaten to the ball by Marco Verratti for the equaliser. 6

Jordan Pickford First called into action ten minutes before the break when saving a tame Marco Verratti attempt and got down well to deny Federico Chiesa in the second half but came out scrambling just before Leonardo Bonucci equalised.
Made a pair of stops in the shootout but it counted for lttle in the end. 6
Kyle Walker Made a couple of outstanding recovery runs as the right-sided centre back and later the right full back. Showed a piece of remarkable calm deep in added time when calmly chesting a cross from the right to Jordan Pickford. For a moment it felt like the whole of Wembley paused its breath. 6
John Stones Remember before the tournament there were fears that he needed Maguire next to him as a guiding influence? The Manchester City player did little wrong throughout the tournament and it would be harsh to be too critical of how Bonucci turned him for the equaliser.. He had gone close himself from a corner two minutes before the concession. 6

Harry Maguire Cleared the corner that led to Luke Shaw’s opening goal and produced a couple of decisive interventions. 7
Kieran Trippier Justified his inclusion and the change of shape inside three minutes by bombing forward and finding Shaw with a deep cross after Kane found him in plenty of space. In the 12th minute similar happened as the striker found his former Tottenham clubmate as the cross this time won a corner but it was a move that England did not repeat again. The first man off, with Bukayo Saka on in his place. 7
Kalvin Phillips Outstanding job tracking Marco Verratti in the first half. Continued to work tirelesssly but his influence waned as Italy grabbed control. 7
Declan Rice So much for the West Ham man’s lack of big game experience. He was outstanding for 70 jminutes before being replaced by Jordan Henderson. During his time on the pitch no one made more dribbles and he nullified the presence of Nicolo Barella very well. He did look exhausted coming off – the substitution at a time when Italy looked likely to go in front made plenty of sense. Could be seen applauding fans with tears streaming down his face at the end. 8

Luke Shaw What a time to score your first England goal. Everything about the move was exceptional. He started and finished it and the finish was near-perfect, taken first time and leaving Gianluigi Donnarumma with no chance even if it scraped the woodwork. Remained a threat throughout despite England spending so long suffering without the ball. 8
Harry Kane Immediate justification for dropping deep by playing a fine, swift pass out to Trippier for Shaw’s goal and tried to repeat the trick a few minutes later. Often found himself tracking Jorginho and never earned a sight of goal himself. 6

Raheem Sterling Switched flanks with the thought process presumably to exploit Chelsea’s third-choice left back, Emerson Palmieri, who has barely played all season and was only in the side because of Leonardo Spinazzola rupturing an achilles in the quarter-final. Did little in the first half, although almost got on the end of a Mount pass that would have led to a clear opportunity, but made a couple of runs to help settle England down after conceding. 6
