It is now few weeks away from the start of the Premier League, and teams are getting stuck into their preseason friendlies and a lot have even made signings this summer although Chelsea aren’t among that number.

Evaluating the odds of winning the league on various sites like virgin bet, one can see that Man City are favourites to retain their title by some margin.
Liverpool is next but, almost neck and neck with Chelsea. They dropped off the pace majorly last season, but the bookies expect them to be back and competing right at the very top next year. They’ve made a couple of interesting transfer moves already.
They might pull away from Chelsea if Roman Abramovich opens his wallet however, things could be very different. One would imagine that few signings would swing the needle more than that of Erling Haaland, long rumoured to be the club’s top target this summer.

However, Chelsea squad is superb, and we’ve got depth all over the pitch except up front. We’re especially short now Olivier Giroud has left, and Tammy Abraham still looks likely to leave.
Obviously, that will leave a big hole, and we can only expect a Haaland-sized signing to fill it. A short term solution like Danny Ings will only get us so far, and might end up being a false economy if he gets injured and we find ourselves back in the market for a forward again in a year’s time.
One might assume, we can win the league without Haaland, of course. We won the Champions League with Kai Havertz up front just a couple of months ago.
Conversely, there is a sense that over the course of a long season, a team can’t finish ahead of City and Liverpool’s impressive outfits without a consistent goalscorer who can lead the line on cold nights in the crunch games against title rivals.

There are plenty of players out there who could be that man – including Tammy – but few are as much of a “sure thing” as Haaland. Not only would he catapult Chelsea ahead of Liverpool in the odds for this season’s title race, he would significantly improve their chances of winning trophies for a decade, if he turns out to be as good as he looks like’s going to be.
It’s now down to Roman to make that deal happen – if he wants it.
