Not a bad start for Broja.

After not even getting named to the matchday squad for Southampton’s first two (Premier League) games of the season, Chelsea loanee Armando Broja made his Saints debut getting the start against Newport County in the second round of the Carabao Cup last night.

And what a start it was for the young striker!

Less than ten minutes in, Broja opened the scoring by being first to the rebound after Nathan Redmond’s shot hit the woodwork. About fifty minutes later, Broja was again on target, this time thanks to some good movement and then being found by a cute through ball from Mohamed Elyounoussi, who himself had a hat-trick.

Since the match was not televised, highlights have been hard to come by, but you can watch both goals here. Broja was substituted off just past the hour-mark, replaced by veteran Shane Long as Southampton added a couple more to win 8-0. Eight!

The accounts of those lucky enough to watch the game in person agree that Broja had a very good game, showing good pace and constant willingness to run the channels. It was an astute and mature performance by the 19-year old overall, as one would expect given his success at Vitesse last season.

Hopefully he can build on this debut and feature a bit more going forward by staking a claim for Premier League minutes — if Ralph Hasenhüttl’s meritocracy delivers as expected.
