After 11 years as one of football’s most recognized couples, Gerard Pique and Shakira have announced their split, adding to the Barcelona star’s turbulent year on and off the field.

Pique and Shakira were a high-profile football pair. On and off the field, Pique has had a tumultuous year.

The football is said to have departed their family home, with both parents wanting to put their two children first at this trying period.

In 2010, while filming the music video for Shakira’s single “Waka Waka [This Time for Africa]” – the official World Cup soundtrack in South Africa – the Barcelona star met the worldwide pop icon for the first time.

“We regret to confirm that we are parting ways,” Shakira said in a statement posted by her public relations agency on Saturday.

“We respectfully request that you respect the privacy of our children, who are our first priority.”

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The statement acknowledges the end of one of football’s most famous relationships, equivalent to ‘Posh and Becks,’ Victoria and David Beckham.

Naturally, following a tumultuous year on and off the field, such a high-profile breakup will be difficult for Pique to accept.
