A football player from the Premier League in his late 20s has been detained in north London on rape allegations.
The player, a full international who cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, is currently being questioned by police about the alleged attack that happened last month. He is being held in police custody.
‘On July 4, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,’ stated the Metropolitan Police in a statement.
‘It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.’
The man was apprehended at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody, where he remains, according to the police.
Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.’
In a subsequent statement, the police verified that the suspect, a Premier League football player who was detained early on Monday, is 29 years old.
The player’s club is aware of the circumstance, but they choose not to comment, according to The Telegraph.
Additionally, according to their investigation, the alleged footballer was scheduled to compete in this year’s World Cup in Qatar, which begins in November.
With the new Premier League season starting in a month, teams are embarking on pre-season tours, and it remains to be seen whether the player in question travels.
